Life Sketch of Sri Paramhansa Yogananda

Sri Paramhansa Yogananda was born on January 5, 1893 in Gorakhpur. His childhood name was Mukund Lal Ghosh. His parents were disciples of great Yogi Sri Shyama Charan Lahiri Mahashaya of Banares. His father instructed young Yogananda in meditation practices. After graduating from high school, he met his Guru Swami Sriyukteshwar Giri and was accepted for discipleship training. After a few years of rigorous training in Kriya Yoga, Swami Sriyukteshwar Giri ordained him as a ‘Swami’, and he chose the monastic name Yogananda.

In 1920, he was invited to visit America to speak at a Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. He travelled to America and addressed the Congress. He remained for three years in Boston and made plans to embark on his mission of introducing Kriya Yoga to interested people in West. In 1925, he came to Los Angeles and established his International Headquarters, which he named Self-Realization Fellowship. Earlier in India, he established Yogoda Satsanga Society of India for disseminating Kriya Yoga. During his 32 years stay in America, Paramhansa Yogananda initiated tens of thousands of persons in Kriya Yoga. He trained a number of disciples and gave them specific instructions to carry on his work far into the future. On March 7, 1952, Paramhansa Yogananda entered Maha Samadhi. His body remained uncorrupted.

Paramhansa Yogananda as an Educational Thinker
Paramhansa Yogananda was deeply interested in the education of children. For this, he established a school at Ranchi in 1917 and named it Brahmacharya Vidyalaya. Here the students were taught academic subjects as well as vocational ones. All the students were also trained in Kriya Yoga and scientific techniques of meditation. Emphasis was laid on physical culture and outdoor activities. Paramhansa Yogananda called this school “How to Live School”. The concept of such a school is to educate the students in such a manner so that they are able to lead a balanced life. He was of firm belief that value-based education was the only way to develop the personality of a child. He developed a well-designed curriculum, methodology of teaching and techniques for personality development. His sound educational philosophy found place in a large number of educational institutions. It is a matter of great satisfaction that educational planners and thinkers in India have started to recognise his contribution to education.

About the Conference

Spirituality is one of the important dominant forces linking deep rational, theoretical and emotional approaches for the well-being of mankind. However, in the contemporary education with an over accentuated importance and promotion of science and technology without spiritual dimension has caused incongruence in the self, society, nation and the world. Thus, there is a need to increase the awareness towards the synthesis of spirituality, science and education to widen the intellectual perspectives, so as to synchronize the society. 3rd Paramhansa Yogananda International Conference on Spirituality in Science, Education and Fine Arts to be held in Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla is an attempt to understand the correlation among all. It aims at bringing together a galaxy of prominent experts on a common platform to present and summarize their vision on deeper questions of the life and cosmos. Plenary and keynote lectures covering major areas of theme will be delivered by eminent presenters. The organisers hope that participants from India and other countries will come and enrich the corpus of knowledge.
